Giving Thanks

The Bible is a book of thanksgiving, offering praise and gratitude to God for the grace and mercies we have received so many times. And scripture also includes thanks being given from one person to another. At the end of his letters, Paul would give thanks like this:

“I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deacon of the church at Cenchreae, so that you may welcome her in the Lord as is fitting for the saints, and help her in whatever she may require from you, for she has been a benefactor of many and of myself as well.

Greet Prisca and Aquila, who work with me in Christ Jesus, and who risked their necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles.” (Romans 16.3-4)

There are many “risking their necks for our lives” right now. We should be giving thanks to God and to them. Here’s a song (skip the ad) to encourage you to do just that:

The Navajo Nation (Four Corners Area)

The Navajo Nation, which includes parts of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah, had 3,122 identified positive COVID-19 cases and 100 confirmed deaths as of last Sunday night. The Navajo Nation includes 27,425 square miles of land that extends into New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah, and borders Colorado, with 173,677 people living there. Many homes do not have running water, making basic hygiene difficult. Along with poverty, lack of medical care, and now, shortage of food (only 7 grocery stores in the whole Nation), life in the Navajo Nation is grim. There are ten Presbyterian congregations located in these lands and they are coordinating efforts with eight outside PCUSA churches to provide food boxes to extended families.

Merciful God, we pray for our neighbors around the world, who are combatting the coronavirus with few resources. Guard them and our co-workers, raise up assistance and support, guide our Presbyterian denomination in ministry during this difficult time, and widen our view of the work to be done. Amen.

Peace Be With You,

Pastor David
