And then, when Jesus encountered sinners, he did not exact from them a sacrifice. He did not
require penance for ones transgressions. In fact, he taught against gestures of amends for ones guilt.
He reminded his listeners of the words from Hosea, I desire mercy, not sacrifice. (Matthew 9:13)
Jesus abbreviated the words of Hosea who said, I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the
knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings. (Hosea 6:6)
Jesus did not look to receive a token gesture from sinners; instead, Jesus gave himself to them.
After he called Matthew, Jesus broke bread with him and other tax collectors and sinners.
After we receive the call of Christ, we receive the invitation to sit at Table with him, through the
Lords Supper. We come in faith that we will be nourished by the body of Christ. We come in faith
that we will be sustained by the body of Christ.
We come as sinners.
Thanks be to God.
Amen.
