One more thought—people get bent over for all kinds of reasons. The woman was bent over
because of a spirit that crippled her. The synagogue leader was bent over by the weight of the law that
kept him from seeing this woman or the fact that God took more delight in her healing than in the letter
of the law being followed. People in our world are bent over, too—from hunger and poverty and all the
spirits that cripple them. And we are bent over, too, not because we want to be but because we’re part
of the global capitalist system, and because until all are free from oppression, none are free.
But Jesus comes and sees us—just as we are—and invites us to come forward—through that
narrow gate,  the one that’s open all the time for all to come through, the one you have to drop all the
burdens you’re carrying and bend over to go through and into God’s Kingdom, where we begin to
know the love and the freedom, where we can begin to look see each other and God’s world where we
can find healing and where we can say, “Free at last, free at last, thank God I’m free at last.”
